Jury Selection in the Johannes Mehserle case in the killing of Oscar Grant

A change of venue moved the murder trial of Johannes Meserle, the BART transit police officer, to Los Angeles from Oakland. On January 1, 2009, Meserle shot and killed Oscar Grant III in the back on the Fruitvale platform while several onlookers video taped the shooting.

We, the people do not care about this young mans past, it was Jan 1st that is the subject, and the killing of an unarmed young man. We stand as one with the family of Oscar Grant; it could have been my nephew, yours, your child. This is unaccecptable, and too frequent. I am disgusted by the fact that race has been brought into this case. I live in san francisco and my neighbor was a former BART police officer. The BART police officers receive 8 hours and sometimes less training. I think that bringing race into this issue is pulling America back. Race should not be a factor in this. The officer pulled his gun instead of his taser and made a mistake. Involuntary Manslaughter was the right decision.
