rsync can copy files from one directory to another on a local machine, local to a remote machine (upload), or remote machine to local (download). It can preserve owner, group, timestamp, and permissions. It handles symlinks, device files, and more. It is a fantastic tool for backing up data, or other situations where you want to make a copy.
