So I'm guessing you need to use chord inversions so you can slide as possible up and down the slide?

@kickinmilla Yes, and generally, you need to be aware of what, exactly can be played right above or below where you are at any instant. Not only are you going to have to be aware of chord inversions, but also of what is usually called "chord/scale" relations. Simply put, there are scales which work with particular chords. A great example is the Dorian scale, which always works with the jazz minor chord for that note--e.g. a "D" Dorian will work with Dminor or Dminor7. This allows for "licks"

I can see if I can do an improv where I emphasize doodling.

That is the most I could think of immediately.
