From a practical viewpoint, Boss pedals are affordable, usually easy to use, and while a bit noisy, when playing Live, with other Band members, no one can hear what little noise there might be.

When Recording, well, every bit of extra noise coming out of the Amp is going to get picked up in the recording. Boss Live is fine. Boss in the recording studio, Not so fine.
