The troops are the victims of the zombies. The zombie masses elect or allow themselves to be ruled by those who order the troops into mindless conflicts. The masses allowing the few to keep them miserable seems to be the only constant in the human condition.

The rightful owners of this song are the people of England and Ireland who fought and died or lost their loved ones in that decades long bloody conflict for which both sides paid dearly. I think you do the song a disservice and disrespect the people for whom it was intended when you remove it from it's proper context.
