Wounded by the recent death of her husband, Dr. Belinda Simpson (Sarah Jones) arrives in the tiny town of Sikeston to take up the post of town physician. Once there, she discovers that many of the towns residents, including children at an orphanage run by Miss Hattie Clarence (Cloris Leachman), have fallen ill to or died from an unknown ailment. Soon, Belinda begins to worry that she is in over her head, despite reassurances from her best friend, Annie (Haylie Duff), and the town's blacksmith, Lee (Jordan Bridges).
Unfortunately, the residents of Sikeston arent as trusting of Belindas abilities as a doctor mainly because shes a woman. As well, many of them dont even want her to help the orphans, who they blame for infecting the rest of the town. Indeed, they would be happy to see the orphanage close altogether. Opposed by what seems like the entire town, Belinda must trust in her abilities, her friends and her faith to guide her

@waterlily423 There where curling irons at that time. The iron was usually heated on top of a wood burning stove such as the kitchen stove. There is a good scene in the movie Little Women where they got the curling iron too hot and burned off some of one of the girl's hair.

yeah, I agree with the modern thing-namely their hair, I mean, where would they find a curling iron to do haylie duff's hair that way? But, it's true, this is no BBC period drama

@kerowind i know right. Also the female doctor Belinda won't have a southern or western drawl or accent because she's from the North, considering she had such an education and liberties most women are surprised at in those times whereas in the North it was rare but not uncommon, Most of the other characters besides her and her friend seem to have some accents but other than that it may seem Modern only because this is America not a BBC epic drama classic
