I always thought that Austria is just a country that happens to speak German because it used to belong to what we all know as 'Germany' today; but the truth is that the idea of a unified Germany only became realized prior to the second world war. Back in the Imperial ages, the German-speaking kingdoms were all divided, Prussia and Austria being the two dominant ones, occasionally fighting to annex the smaller states of Bavaria, Saxony, Westphalia, and Wurttemberg. Austria is my favorite tho :)
