This race is already posted on YouTube, courtesy of cf1970. This version follows Slew a bit further after the wire.

I'm amazed the term Triple Crown never comes up in this call by the great Chic Anderson, even after the finish. Frank Wright finally mentions it.

  • Slew was an outstanding horse, but had the advantage of running against a fairly weak crop of 3 year olds. He won all 3 triple crown races in the same way: ran on the lead, wore down his competition w/o being taxed enough to get caught in the stretch. The split times in the Belmont were really slow (1:14 at the 6F mark?). Secretariat would've been about 18 lengths ahead of Slew at that point in the race. Of course, the track might've been a bit heavy that day, who knows? Fine horse though

  • @bailinnumberguy

Secretariat 18 lengths ahead of Seattle Slew after 6 furlongs. LOL. Absolutely priceless.

It's beyond scary what the bar stool types want to believe, not merely in racing but in any sport. Direct application with no clue regarding situational or stylistic variance.

BTW, the splits in the '78 Belmont were 25 flat, 50 flat, 1:14 flat. I suppose Secretariat would have been 18 lengths ahead of Affirmed and Alydar also, and continue to widen.

Prove Out didn't get the memo.

  • Slew was a great champion but his dad would have beat him Handily we will never see anything like the 1973 Belmont ever again

  • @JimRay83

I like Slew's chances versus Bold Reasoning.

People who take the '73 Belmont at face value tend to make plenty of basic mistakes.

  • Truly an underwhelming reaction to an undefeated horse which has just won the Triple Crown.

  • A very tough competitor and incredible champion.

Thank you for posting this great footage.

  • First of all no matter how great we think any racehorse will be, no one will be able to match the finese and style that Secretariat did it. There's no arguement there at all. I've waited with breathless anticipation for the next TC winner but to no avail.

  • That's so cool :) I work for the owners of his grandson...such a be-a-utiful horse...and he knows it XD

  • we are the proud owners of his granddaughter , Gebb's Glory - she comes from a good line of champs - Bold Ruler , Native Dancer , Polynesian , Northern Dancer...I could go on and on...lol - Slew was amazing. His Grandaughter is going to throw us the next Secretariat !

  • Probably one of the best racehorses that ever lived. I used to own a descendent of Seattle Slew, so I might be a little biased ;)

  • @Chidi5310 Its also a fact the track was not running as fast as the DRF posted .05. It was in error. It was running 4/5 seconds slower when Secretariat hit the track. Christ from DRF uses a ;09 variant the true variant to figure his Beyer figure of 139. The track was .10 the race before with Forego running it. Of course the Secretariat haters will not accept that. so sad, His eights fractions were 12 1/5, 11 2/5, 11 2/5, 11 1/5, 12, 11 3/5, 12 1/5, 12 1/5, 12, 12 4/5, 12 1/5 and 12 4/5. WOW

  • Slew was Undefeated going into the Triple Crown. He seams like the type that played to the competition, if he had better competition, that mighta helped improve his times. Champions always find a way to win, and we can usually only speculate how a Champion vs. Champion would end up, or Champion vs. Seabiscuit...lol.. Great movie too.

  • plzz people u cant do the math like that ...all races are run differently...slew was a great horse...affirmed was a great horse ...been a lot of great horses but there is only 1 Secretariat none of the rest really matters does it...just enjoy em while they are here

  • @bailinnumberguy thats true but he showed that the he was a great champion at age 4... especially if you see that 1978 jockey gold cup, after secreatariat winning the belmont, thats got to be 2nd the greatest peformance in belmont park history even though he lost, in the first 2 furlongs his saddle slip, fractions of 22.3, 45.5 and 1:09.2 in a 1/1/2 race! by the quarter pole it look like that exceller was going to win but Slew came back and lost by nose! AMAZING
