In this test, a spreadsheet with 500,000 rows is opened up in Linux Mint 10 "Julia" (64-bit) and Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit).

Who do you think is faster? Watch and see for yourself!

Windows 7: MS Office 2010 (Excel 2010)
Linux Mint 10: OpenOffice (Calc)

Edit: Want to buy Office 2010 (Complete suite) for just $79? How about Windows 7 Professional for $65?

******************TO THE LiEnucks FANBOYS********************

FAQ:
Q: This is bullshit! Why are you comparing MS Office to OpenOffice?
A: Wrong. This is a Windows vs. LiEnucks comparison.

Q: OK, if this is a "Windows vs LiEnucks" comparison, why did you use the shitty OpenOffice on LiEnucks?
A: For the simple fact that MS Office 2010 x64 DOES NOT RUN on LiEnucks. All EMULATORS on LiEnucks fails to run Office x64 including the infamous BUG RIDDEN WiNE.

Q: OK, why didn't you use a 32-bit version of MS Office on LiEnucks then?
A: Why should I buy the 32-bit version just to test it on LiEnucks? The simple fact that everyone is moving towards 64-bit applications due to their superior performance is what you should be concerned about. Their inability to run on LiEnucks is a big downside.

Q: OK, why didn't you use an OpenOffice extension such as "ODS" to do the test?
A: I already did: Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz3ki4_i-AM

I must point out however that XLSX/XLS is the de facto "universal" format used by almost all businesses, governments, and educational institutions. Comparing "ODS" has no value or point.

Q: What is this "universal" crap you speak of? I do not understand.
A: Afraid not, imbecile. Click here: http://bit.ly/d0Uwxv

International Market Share (Averaged): MS Office 84%, OO: 12%, Others: 4%. Hence, MS Office is "universally used" (huge one sided market share).

Q: I am a LiEnucks fanboy and still 100% in denial :) Can I troll your video?
A: Be my guest, however, you'll only waste your time.

  • OMG! I've tried open the file in Fedora 16 and gone crazy :S

  • @patola123 Gnumeric is really bad though, it'll render your Excel file useless.

    watch?v=6XYzonem1nQ

That's why all businesses use MS Office.

  • Your test is very interesting, you seem to have stumbled on a severe openoffice performance bug indeed. Have you tried opening the file with openoffice in Windows? How does it compare? Have you waited for the file to finish opening?

I've tried your file on my Ubuntu 11.10 desktop (Athlon II 640) and it also took a long time to open in openoffice. However, most of the time I use gnumeric for such tasks, and I took a chance on it. Guess what: it took only 25 seconds to open your file!

  • @lienucksfails2 On Mint that is, not Linux. Linux is just the Kernel much as the NTkernel is just the Windows kernel. You should really try out some other distro one of these days. It's getting slow as you can see. However, BSD owns everything. ;)

  • @MDxm3000 I set up Openjava correctly and it's even slower on my system than Sun Java.

Java is just horrendous on Lunix, in general.

  • @lienucksfails2 Oracle/Sun Java is slow on Linux yes, Openjava can (if set up correct) perform as good as their version on the other hand.

  • @MDxm3000 Java is also a lot slower on Lunix than Windows, check out my new video:

  • @MDxm3000 Well said.
