Hello - I'm afraid those tracks don't exist anywhere in higher quality than that (I wrote them). They were recorded as proper 16-bit tracks on DAT but I left that job before the game launched and, for reasons I never quite understood, the developer used 8 bit versions (which were put together to stream from RAM) on the CD as CD-audio.

Also - I don't think there were ever names for them.

Thanks for uploading though - I don't think I've heard these since about 1993!

Mr.Holmwood, thank you for writing this music. I loved it as a little kid and it still retains a certain nostalgic charm today. It's a shame that the CD quality versions are lost in time; it would have been nice to have heard them.

Perhaps you might do us the honour of naming them though it may have been nearly two decades since you wrote them. I can make the changes in mid-August, since I will be away starting the 6th of June.

How would I go about getting this soundtrack? I've been looking for it for years (and trying to extract it from my CD with zero luck) and it'll make me a very happy person to finally get it.

If the CD has the audio tracks as I think it does, you could use one of those CD audio rippers. I hear that Exact Audio Copy is a good one for Windows. If you happen to be on Linux, I used to use Grip. I think k3b also does the job.

If not, my best suggestion is to do as I did, which was to open RES/R1.RES at 22050Khz 8-bit mono in an audio editor, such as Audacity, and edit out the noise.

You are officially the coolest person on Youtube. This was the first Sim game we ever owned at my house -- it came with our first family computer. But nobody had uploaded the music here until now! It's FANTASTIC music. And it makes it even cooler that the composer himself finally got to hear his own music again for the first time since he created it. Because of you! =)

@hhhhollywood Dear Mr Holmwood, I heartily concur with @JisengSo, these were lovely tracks that carried a great deal of both my and my brother's imaginations. For some weird reason, having not heard the soundtrack in years I'd assumed "track 14" was actually from sc 2000 and named the remake that I did back in 2004 "Over the City". I suppose Track 14 could be called "Over the City"... though the original is very still, calm, like the wilderness.

This was always kind of a strange game for me (probably because I played it when I was quite young), and this music kind of matches it. It's not at all the usually bouncy-happy-jazzy kind of tunes that went with other Sims games, but, at least to me, a darker, more mysterious, industrial feel. I enjoyed it quite a lot, though. Just not really much of a... dunno, Tropical feel to it.

A form of "Background music" has been playing occasionally in my head since I was little. I've always tried to find where it came from, and in another part of my mind that was convinced it doesn't exist and I made it up, I always wanted to find music like it.

@hhhhollywood you're the best dude, both for making and uploading these songs. I can remember hearing them as a kid back in ~2001/2ish at least. I actually tried recording the music directly off my sound card, but obviously this was far from perfect, so I gave up after one track. As for direct ripping, the .RES file threw me :)

Thanks for uploading. I didn't think I'd ever get to hear this music outside of the game, which would've been a shame 'cos it's one of my favs for the music alone :)
