JEFFERSON CITY Camden County Sheriffs Office will be stepping up the fight against impaired driving after receiving a grant to fund a DWI enforcement unit.

The grant increases the number of law enforcement officers that will concentrate on detecting and removing impaired drivers from Camden County roads.

The Missouri Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division contracted with the Camden County Sheriffs Office to create the DWI enforcement unit, which consists of four deputies and four fully equipped DWI enforcement vehicles.

We want people to have a good time at the Lake but we dont want you to drink and drive, said Sgt. Bill Moulder with the Camden County Sheriffs Office.

If youre going to get behind the wheel, remember we will be out there, so use a designated driver.

Camden County Sheriffs Office will participate in the statewide impaired driving mobilization, May 5-9, for Cinco de Mayo.

Statewide DWI enforcement campaigns are held five times throughout the year on dates selected by the Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Advisory Council (LETSAC) based on holidays with a large number of alcohol-involved social activities.

During the 2009 Cinco de Mayo impaired driving mobilization from May 1-3, law enforcement officers statewide issued 385 driving while intoxicated violations.

In addition, citations were issued for 1,606 speeding tickets, 523 safety belt and 33 child restraint violations.

Camden County consistently ranks within the top counties with alcohol-involved crashes and fatalities.

In 2009, 268 people were killed and 1,134 were seriously injured in Missouri traffic crashes involving an impaired driver.
