Myth, Yahweh and Asherah

@ParapaDrifter The etymology of Israel may related to the verbal root śrh, in which case "Israel" would mean "El will rule" (or "Let El rule") where El is the head god and the original god of Israel. It's very unlikely that Israel derives from ʾšrh, since the presence of the yod (the 'i' sound) at the beginning of Israel indicates a verb is included in the name (and ʾšrh is a proper noun, not a verb).

Who decided Yahweh was real and the others were not? You want an actual name? KING JOSIAH!!
Read the Bible. Its...right...THERE. King Josiah was a true prick who not only outlawed worship of all other gods, but killed their followers and desecrated their graves. Oh, and he "found" Deuteronomy while cleaning the attic. A book of laws that just so happened to speak out against the very practices he was trying to outlaw. What a coincidink.

If people looked back at today from the year 4500AD, they would find that the word 'god' is used in many religions. That does not mean that all refer to the same 'God'. Same goes for 'El'. A monotheistic tribe enters a polytheistic land and says Yaweh is God (El) above all else. Heathen try to add the new 'Yaweh' to their group of gods but in the 1st of the 10 Commandments and throughout Scripture, Jews have a covenant with the one God. There is no evidence that THEY ever believed anything else.

@awhooker True enough. Though Josiah's actions did get the ball rolling in that direction. My real point was that having one deity being put over another isn't something that just happens. In such cases, some people like to gloss over such things saying "they" call this a myth, or "the culture" worships this or that.
Well, I say Josiah (who I think has gotten glossed over in history) was a king who said "Worship Yahweh...or die." That is the legacy. One of forced indoctrination.

@csaver King Josiah hardly decided Yahweh was real and the others weren't. In fact, I wouldn't even say that monotheism proper exists in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). The Deuteronomistic reforms of Josiah highlight the importance of Yahweh to the exclusion of the other gods, and centralizes the cult in Jerusalem. The other Judahite deities are demoted (though their existence is not flatly denied).

@Helenhealer (Lucifer is a sun god scapegoated by the Christians .) this was done in the old testament . Before there was any Christians . nice try , but not so simple . also the bible tells us of many Gods not just one ! so you are wrong again. more wrong than right . maybe you should shut up, and read up! before putting foot in mouth. take foot and smash your little devil statue behind you. that might help the truth come to you.
Helen is correct but the truth is grander. Asherah is The Woman of the Tree
brought to Israel by Solomon, aka Sheshonq. They were chased by El but went to Arcadia Greece to establish Asherah as Athena Woman of the Tree ( DNA). The Genographic Project used DNA to prove all races came from Ethiopia 200,000 BCE exactly as stated by the Sumerians who assert that Ninmah fashioned adam and NinKi fashioned Eve. Ninmah = Isis = Athena = The Magdalene, who came fm Galilee w/ HeZeus. The Books of Isis.com
