This has been an enormous undertaking.

We worked on the canvas on the floor of a theater scene shop for a week. Upon our arrival, we were directed to leave and go buy paper, staple gun ect. (which we were apparently supposed to have as per an e-mail we never received)--being on a time constraint, the beginning of this adventure was already turning out to be chaotic...
It took us 3 hours to prep everything for the canvas to be laid down. Finally, we could prime it with rollers and house paint.
We went to eat at a local Salvadorean restaurant (where the waitresses were aghast at my being there, as I soon realized it is a restaurant primarily for men to enjoy their skimpy outfits and generous clevage)-- yet most importantly: the food was good, and the wine helped to relax us enough for a few more hours of work.
We started the canvas by sketching our ideas with charcoal sticks. We measured out for perspective (mainly the pyramid and gazebo) ... this process took about two days before we actually started in with the paint.

  • you should have gotten bamboo sticks to draw with & put the charcoal at the end with a rubber band. i do scenic painting for theatre & i only do detail work by hand cause you'll kill you're back if you have to do a whole show like that....looks interesting though....

  • @valpack07 -that's a great idea! We didn't have a space to hang it for a few weeks because we were working w/a deadline & had to get started wherever we could, which was difficult bc it was so large. Your idea never occurred to us! We managed to get into the scenery shop.... and worked there until the theater space opened up where we could hang it-at that point it was much easier as we could move it up and down to work on it. I will have to try the bamboo stick next time! Thanks for the tip!!

  • @olivosARTstudio no problem. when i do a drop of any size & i'm not using a stick i get yelled at by my scenic charge. it took some time getting used to it, but it's basically just an extension of your arm. scenic paint shops should have them on hand, but if not i believe Rosebrand still sells them.

do you have any other process videos or photos? i would love to see some of the end results....

  • @valpack07 - Thanks! We bought the canvas from Rosebrand!.... I don't know when we will do a drop next..honestly we are mostly easel painters..though I do like to work large (6' x 7') ...you can see the finsihed result on the video response here "artists paint a backdrop for Mexican dancers". Thanks for watching!
