Ludwig : Italy, 1972
Ludwig is a 1972 film by Italian director Luchino Visconti about the life and death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Visconti's muse, Helmut Berger, stars as Ludwig, while Romy Schneider reprises her role as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in a very different portrayal as in the 1950s Sissi trilogy.
The film was made in Munich and other parts of Bavaria, Germany and at the following locations: Berg Castle, Castle Herrenchiemsee, Castle Hohenschwangau, Castle Linderhof, Ettal and Neuschwanstein Castle. During filming in Linderhof Castle the temperature in the famed mirror hall got so high that one of the mirrors cracked as a result, it is to this day the only broken piece in the original decor of the hall.

Such a beautiful film, not only the handsome actors and actresses but the photography, every stage created with so much care for detail and beauty. Of course Ludwig was gay, being a Catholic and in such a repressive environment... must have been hell to live like that. Visconti is (was) one of the greatest film makers.

But I agree, the film pays off particularly because of Romy, she is more beautiful, more sexy here than she was as a young actress. Swet SISSI is gone here and she portrays a truly sohphisticated woman

He makes a terrific indication here, the indication of gay nature...I think that it is the moment when Ludwig discovers his homosexuality: put up a flag, light a fire, take off your gloves and...he looks at his hands with this special 'confusion'
