The Scourging at the Pillar from HCH Drama's 2006 production of "The Passion Play," set to "Mary, Did You Know" with alternate lenten lyrics.

~*~LENTEN LYRICS~*~
(Bridge by Emily Snyder)

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?

Did you know
That your baby boy
Had come to make us new?

And this child that you delivered
Had delivered you?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would give sight to a blindman?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Could raise the dead with His hand?

Did you know
That your baby boy
Had walked where angels trod?

And when you kiss your little baby
Then you kiss the face of God?

Mary did you know? (2x)

Agnus Dei
qui tollis peccata mundi...
pacem

Lord have mercy
Oh Christ have mercy
Oh Lord have mercy
Have mercy on us (2x)

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Had come to set us free?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Must die upon the tree?

Did you know
That your baby boy
Was Heaven's perfect lamb?

And this sleeping child you're holding
Is the great I AM!

  • why don't you show the actual scourging?

  • For a few reasons:

    1) we needed to do a quick change on Jesus to put the blood on his body, etc.

    2) we wanted to give Mary a moment to grieve, in order for the audience to connect with another human during the Passion and to view salvation history

    3) We knew that the via dolorosa and crucifixion were going to happen very soon and wanted to build the audience's emotions from this point to that.

  • Rather unrealistic to portray Jesus as wearing a T-shirt during the scourging.

  • Not at all. As you may be able to tell from other clips, we did this in modern dress. Later, when they tore his shirt from him, he had scars, etc. underneath.

  • Brilliant! True perfection of the lyrics!

So far every version of this that I've found state in the first stanza that May is yet to be saved, no, she already has been! Congratulations to who ever re wrote that stanza! The acting was very realistic, brought tears to my eyes too. Again, congratulations!

  • It's a good performance. They made the crying and struggling realistic.

  • well done

  • any school that takes time out to do a passion play get five stars in my book!! great job you guys, kepp it up!!

  • Confess your sins and faithful and right is he to apologise our sins!

    Have a Piece in Him!

  • whoa... whoa.....

  • good point very good point

  • I think the costume are fine. Perhaps I'm wrong about this, but it is likely that they chose to use modern cloting to represent that Jesus died for all people of all times...that the crucifixion and resurrection are just as relevant today I'f you've seen the painting "Forgiven" it shows Jesus holding a man in modern clothes holding a hammer and nail. We are just as guilty tday for the crucifixion as those who actually performed the act. He saved us all...he should look like us all.

  • why is pilate in a black suit and the crowd in modern clothing ?? Not very good costumes

  • You must have so much fun doing this. Your voice is beautiful by the way...Kathi
