In 2004, the 5 line lay in ruins. A new automated announcement program is plaguing the R142 cars which run on the line, replacing a mild-mannered voice with a meaner sounding voice. An intrepid railfan went out to document the old recordings. Here's some of what he came up with.

  • Did the 2 train have these "old" announcements too?

  • @Jkw718 Different voice, but there was an old recording set. I'm in the process of making a second video like this, and you can find it there. Interestingly, the announcements for the 5 shared the same station name recordings with the other lines it ran with. That is until a new recording set took its place.

  • lol, at first, i thought they used that text to speech program you can find on any computer

  • Nope, those are actual recordings of people making the announcements. If it were a TTS app, it would likely mispronounce some station names like Houston Street.

  • What's the font you used to render the LCD displays?

  • I call it Eighth Avenue Express, after the subway line I first saw it on (R110B cars 3007~3009 originally had this type of character block). The LCD displays in the Amtrak portion of Penn Station also use these, so I just took a picture of the character block and traced from that. The font is not currently available for download.

  • I liked Melissa Kliner's announcements. I wish they would have kept them.

  • I still don't understand why they removed Melissa Kleiner-Cohen's announcements on the 5.

  • melissa has a nice voice, and dianne too jessica sounds like a typical new yorker

  • excellent recordings. I went to LI after all new gen trains came on. congrats on recordings!!!

  • Four different people to record stop announcements on a single subway line. Only in New York... LOL

  • Diaane Tompson is a great annoucer besides Jesisca

  • The first days when they had multiple voices doing one announcements. Perfect example at 138th St. Honestly, these do sound better in my opinion. And Jessica sounds a little more mild too. Thanks a lot for posting (even though I am super late)!
