We certainly need to be loving of the weaker brother, but does that mean we should live in a cave to avoid offending someone who may potentially be a weaker brother? What about exhorting weaker bretheren to no longer hold to their unbilblical conclusions? Phil Johnson and I discuss this topic in this clip from Rightly Divided, Episode 6.

  • Lane, I really enjoy your videos. They have helped me greatly in my search and understanding of the Doctrines of Grace. BTW, good to see those MacArthur commentaries in the background. : )

  • @metanoeo1 Thanks! I'm glad to hear that they've been helpful. That's what I put them up for. (As far as the commentaries, you should see Phil's office. He's director of MacArthur's Grace to You ministry. It's a mini-library!

  • What about the weaker brother/sister that is a recovering drug addict & alcoholic (with a couple mental illnesses), and goes back to using?

  • @Twinkies87 We should definitely be aware of them, and love them enough not to make them stumble. The tricky part is realizing who is a Pharisee who stumbles and who is the weaker brother/sister. I believe this is best determined in a one on one sitting with the person.

  • A weaker brother is one of conscience though set at liberty. Many believers cannot handle the same amount of liberty. Those with conscience should not make known everything of their weakness it is a resposibilty. But once known it must be respected the stronger brother must give up liberty of anothers conscience. It is not just the stronger brother who must be responsible if we tell about our weaknesses all the time we steal liberty from all .

  • I got the point, but...

It's the weaker brother that goes to movies (idol's temples), not the one who abstains.

  • Great. Thanks for posting, its a lot of help!

  • Phil Johnson looks like Charles Spurgeon.

  • It's difficult - the person, despite myself & others advising her not to stop taking her medications (if she feels "normal" she believes she's "cured") but goes ahead and stops taking her medications (a couple times every year). She ends up at square 1. She does have doctors & has a case worker; been admitted to the psych unit of a hospital. We're patient, loving, supportive, etc. and continue to pray for/with her and be supportive, etc.

    Please pray for her.

    Thank you & God bless.

  • Excellent counsel. Good seeing something new Lane.

  • @LaneCh Amen.
