A powerful depiction of addiction and self-delusion, with a couple of scenes that are not for the faint-hearted. There are fine performances all-round but Ellen Burstyn in particular is superb in the role of Sara Goldfarb, who spends her time watch TV. After a phone call announces that she will be invited to be a participant on a game show, she becomes obsessed with being able to fit into an old red dress, and begins taking a cocktail of prescription pills. The 'uppers' and 'downers' alter her behaviour, but she maintains that the chance to be on television has given her a reason to live. However, when her invitation does not arrive, and she begins to increase her dosage ...
