Triffick site this. When I was really studying chess I used it compulsively and really couldn't fault it. Once peaked at 1781 and consequently died of a surfeit of pride. Wouldn't bother with any other site if CCing it. Engines are only a problem at the upper levels and they have a great community going.

@nomindchess Thanks for watching. Yes, chessworld is another good one with a lot of really strong players. A good chess community. Still, I tried it out, and found it a bit limiting. A lot of features (even basic ones such as looking back through the game) are not accessible unless you are a paying member. I am more likely to pay for a service if I can try it out properly beforehand... One of the best things about the web is the variety. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.

@isayoldchap1 : I left with a load of timeouts and let down my clanmates so would be embarrassed to say the name or go back as him. When I respawn I'll see if you want a game but for now I'm staying away from CC / serious chess as the studying took up so much time. Still play a few 10/5 games on FICS though when back in from the pub (which explains my 1200 rating) or when trying out whatever JRobi has just done a video on. But yeah, would love to have you thrash me at some point :)

is it only possible to play those games where every player has got several days per move or can you also play in real time, for example 30 min. for a game or something like that?

Yea, I like this because I was on the FICS site and they were charging. I'll use this one until I'm ready for some of the other chess sites. Thanks chap.

@number94 Well, I am sure it does happen, although probably not as much as you'd think. I avoid playing opponents who have mysteriously never lost a game on the server or lost a crazily low percentage of games. Frankly, I don't think anyone has cheated against me on this server.
