West bound NS ex-Conrail coal train exits the Hatfield tunnel on the ex-N&W at Sprigg, WVa. On the other side the tunnel is Matewan. The location of the family feud of the Hatfield and McCoy's. As the westbounds caboose passes, and eastbound with a UP leader passes.

  • is that an unlined tunnel?

  • @BaltimoreAndOhioRR Yes it is!

  • How long ago was this vid taken? I heavn't seen a caboose on a train for 10 years. Come to think of it, I heavn't seen a caboose on a train ever, in operation.

  • @KSE828 The video was taken in the spring of 2007. The NS has a lot of coal branches down on the Pokey Division, and as to make back-up moves down miles of railroad. So they used a caboose to make these moves and the conductor stays in contact with the engineer. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294...

  • I liked the part with the trains!

  • Awesome video.. Nice catch on the two trains, too!

  • Geez, doesn't the caboose get a lot of coal dust back there? I would think they would need respirators.

  • A classic Pocahontas scene. Steve Bailey sure blew the horn! He always does! :D

That was him on the Conrail.

  • @BaltimoreAndOhioRR ey tvery much my friend!

this one also goes to my favaorite in tath case

  • @juvmol - 'unlined' basically means as-is. Like the tunnel was a hole dug through a rock mountian and left as-is. Usually, after the tunnel is dug, a brick lining is built up against the rock surfaces, so it looks 'finished'. it's rare to see an unlined tunnel like this nowadays. Even many very old tunnels, which were unlined when first used, were upgraded and lined in the 1900's.

  • @BaltimoreAndOhioRR waths tath ........unlined?

  • very god railfanin spot

  • Dontcha just love trains! Very cool! :)
