Transcript

Hi, my name is Terry Kingsmill.  I'm a Professional Agrologist and I serve as Registrar with the Ontario Institute of Agrologists in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

The OIA is dedicated to helping internationally educated immigrants find careers in agriculture, agri-food and agri-science here in Ontario.

This is the first in a series of educational videos that we produced to give you some insight into the help that's available when you arrive here and look for a career not just a job.

But first, let me tell you about the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and how becoming a member can greatly improve your chances of finding the career you're looking for.

Since the early 1960s, the Ontario Institute of Agrologists has represented agricultural professionals who are dedicated to providing excellent service and protecting the public interest.  Today, the OIA consists of more than 10,000 publicly accountable professionals across Canada.

Supported by the Ontario Government, our "Bridging to Employment" project can help you to prepare yourself to compete in the job search market.

English communication skills are essential and if you are from a non-English speaking country, this could be your greatest challenge.  We can connect you with free English classes and we offer classes that concentrate on the language of your profession.

We also offer classes that teach you how to write a resume and cover letter and how to prepare for an interview.  You can learn how to make a personal portfolio that includes life experiences as well as your education and training.  And we teach you how to work within professional standards and ethics.

As a member of the OIA, you can upgrade your skills, enhance your knowledge, get access to conferences and workshops, mentor with Professional Agrologists, and make valuable industry contacts to help you move forward with your career.  And we give personal service to help you along the way.

There are many people who can help.  In our educational video series, you'll learn how people at local immigration offices can help you get settled in a new country and evaluate and improve your English language skills.

An employment placement officer gives some valuable tips to help you compete for the career you want.

And some internationally educated OIA members share their career search experiences with you.

We hope you'll find the videos informative and helpful.

Visit our website and learn more about the Ontario Institute of Agrologists. It may be the first step you take to find a meaningful career here in Ontario.
