yet Jones came closer to the HB version and had better animation

@hackensac Because producer William Snyder approached Gene about doing so for MGM, who apparently still were interested in theatrical cartoon product despite having closed their own studio a few short years earlier. Mind you, Chuck Jones wasn't exactly a fan of the Hanna and Barbera MGM Tom and Jerry shorts, at least from a conceptual standpoint. Yet he too tackled the series and, like Deitch, put his own stamp on the characters.

Why would he direct Tom and Jerry shorts if he didn't even like Tom and Jerry?

Amen Gene!!!! :D

If you wanna see good Gene Deitch work, watch his Weston Woods children's book adaptations. That's my childhood right there...

Thanks a lot Gene, This is exactly what i told my friends after we watched the last Christmas Carol movie... I just felt there is no reason for doing a film in such a realistic style if a camera and real actors could have done it much better. Drawn animation have unlimited possibilities
Gene Deitch is a brilliant man. Much respect for him....but we can talk about what happened with Tom and Jerry later.

Unfortunately, a lot of cartoon fans (like me) first learned about Gene Deitch via Tom and Jerry. As a kid, his name was anathema to me until I learned more about his work.
