Handfeeding cockatiel chick

A young pied cockatiel chick in handfeeding.

This very enthusiastic baby would swallow the whole syringe if he could, so to help the food go to the right place I hold him. The syringe is placed gently from the left side of the chick because the gullet starts from the right side. This is how we can prevent the food to go to the trachea, which would cause a slow and painful death.

Every now and then I take the syringe of from the mouth to make sure that the chick has all the time to swallow the food, without choking.

REMEMBER PEOPLE! Handfeeding is NOT an easy task and your mistakes might lead to a cockatiel's death! Do NOT start to handfeed if it is not a necessarity.

It is a verey skilled and delicate job handfeeding a baby bird I agree! So many things can go wrong resulting in the death of the chick. I had to learn these skills very quickly when two adult teils attacked and rejected their babies. It is something I would only ever do in an emergency, but I would certainly do it again if a chicks life depended on it, even though I was living on pins the first weeks!

I really do agree. I tend to handfeed also only when it's necessary. Too many just do it to "get them tame", but they don't realize the possible cost of the selfliness. :/

I am handfeeding 2 cockatiel chicks right now!! I have 4 chicks but decided only to handfeed 2 and last year I handfed 3 and one died from getting chilled!! I agree handfeeding is a big job!!
