Autonomous Audi TTS ascends Pikes Peak

Audi has announced the autonomous TT-S has successfully completed the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 27 minutes.

While this doesn't sound terribly impressive, race officials estimated an expert driver would take approximately 17 minutes to finish the 12.42 mile (20 km) rally course in a standard TT-S. Furthermore, the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine - with 265 hp (198 kW / 269 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of toque - enabled the car to reach speeds of 45 mph (72 km/h).

To prevent 3241 pounds (1470 kg) of German engineering from flying off a cliff, the TT-S was outfitted with two computers which run different algorithms to calculate safety data and vehicle dynamics. More importantly, an advanced GPS system - with a margin of error under two centimeters - helped to keep the car on course.

@yumikuchki Why? Suppose you met your friend and you both need to get in one place. He suggest you to get into his car to speak with you while driving. You say you car "follow me".

Suppose you got drunk at the party, tired etc. You may turn on autopilot and have a nap.

You may suddenly be at some place without you car (remain it at home or you parked it in another side of building). You car will be able to drive up to you. Robot won't steal you toy it'll make it more fun.

This is awesome, during rush hour traffic switch on the autopilot, don't have to deal with stop and go traffic. When you feel like you just gotta drive, switch on the manual control.
