@Adamfulgence And thank you for bringing this song to my attention. Tom Waits is probably in the top ten of contemporary American songwriters -- sort of an American Jacques Brel with a penchant for experimenting with sound as well as words.

@Adamfulgence I am going to guess that Tom Waits was familiar with the Chinese Tang Dynasty (?) poem, "Daiyu's Burial of the flowers" from the play "The Dream of the Red Chamber".
This poem has been set to song in various forms of Chinese opera as well as modern interpretations. YT 黛玉葬花 if you are interested.
