What does environmental devastation actually look like? At TEDxVictoria, photographer Garth Lenz shares shocking photos of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project -- and the beautiful (and vital) ecosystems under threat.

For almost twenty years, Garth's photography of threatened wilderness regions, devastation, and the impacts on indigenous peoples, has appeared in the world's leading publications. His recent images from the boreal region of Canada have helped lead to significant victories and large new protected areas in the Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Ontario. Garth's major touring exhibit on the Tar Sands premiered on Los Angeles in 2011 and recently appeared in New York. Garth is a Fellow of the International League Of Conservation Photographers

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Some of the comments here are profoundly lacking some perspective...It is not a question of cost effectiveness of technology, It is about DO WE HAVE THE RESOURCES AND TECH TO STOP USING OIL TODAY? Yes we do! Will we? Not until the monetary system is in place. No decisions are been made going against money...that's the bottom line

WE NEED RESOURCE BASED ECONOMY...till we get it, there will be no significant change in the monetary system, be sure about that...

  • @Ysacoelfua You're a sad individual. You think that just because an individual feels passionately about something enough to show emotion that it makes them a "wuss"?

Cut this macho-bravado shit. When the shit hits the fan and reality finally hits you hard just how badly and beyond repair our planet is for your children or your children's children, we'll see just how tough you are.

You soon realize that you can not live happily and healthily on a sick and dying planet.

  • so it goes...

  • @Ysacoelfua Showing emotions in public which is then displayed to the entire world = wuss?? Wait, no - actually making fun of a person who does that on the INTERNET under the guise of anonymity is certainly reeking of COWARDICE. marinate on that.. we often point fingers at others for what we haven't changed/accepted in ourselves.

  • I don't care what you guys say, the fact is: Garth Lenz is a wuss. He's more emotional than a 17 year old girl in her period. How pathetic!

Not only he undermined his own presentation by showing his wussification but he also ridiculed himself in public and now the whole world can laugh at him just the way I did.

He's a big girl and he is unable to make the world a better place for he's governed by his emotions and will burst into tears asking for his Mom in the face of problems. WUSS!!!

  • @Ysacoelfua Nobody else here is calling him a "wuss" but you, so you appear to be the only one making a fool out of yourself in public.

  • @taneval23 DUH - I am not saying I am not part of the problem. At least I am aware of that and do my very best everyday to not be. You with your comments are obviously in denial, and a bigger part of the problem.

  • I truly hate it when someone uses sentiment to create an arguement. Do the tarsands pollute? Yes. Are they as bad as what people like this say? No. When looking at the size of the truck and the field, remember they have to clean up the area at the end. They have to replant it and repopulate the species. Now think about the latest suburban development. Will it ever get replanted or redeveloped. No.

  • @Ysacoelfua Your comments show your weak character and intelligence. I probably speak for most people here,"Please crawl back under the rock from which you came."

  • @GrowTheTruth Yes, I promise you, the earth is not going anywhere, we are! The earth has been here millions of years before humans and will stay after we are gone. You are so self-important that you think that you can kill the earth. Give me a break! The earth can shake you like a flea at any moment. If I were you I would be more worried about myself than about the earth.

Well, the GArth Lenz certainly showcased more than the subject! What an embarrasment for his wife and kids if he has any.

  • Hmm. Are you human? If so then by your own logic you are a locust.

  • @GrowTheTruth I must have hit a nerve!

He undermined his own presentation and made a fool of himself in public. Now, all over the internet and all over the world, eveyone can see what a wussy he is, regardless of the validity of his research and evidence.

I feel sorry for his wife - if he has one. Which I doubt.
