This is a brief introduction to the new Genki Phonics course.
It's based on the work we've been doing in India and China to get kids literate in English, but has been redesigned for children who aren't native speakers of English. The idea is that once they have done some basic Genki English ( http://genkienglish.net/cdset.htm ) they'll then be able to understand the words they read in this phonics course. We're still testing and developing, but what we have so far is certainly usable so please give it a try!

The steps are:

1. Revision - review the previous grapheme/phonemes
2. New sound - use the Phonics Poster ( http://genkienglish.net/phonicsws.htm) with the words the kids have learnt in previous Genki English lessons. Assign a gesture to the sound.
3. Thumbs Up - Thumbs Down. Does this word contain the sound?
4. Letter formation - on the board.
5. Blending game - kids come to the front and practice with the gestures.
6. Phonic Fingers - how many sounds in the word?
7. Sight words (I didn't cover those here as they come in later lessons)
8. Workbook ( http://genkienglish.net/phonicsws.htm)

As I say the course is still in beta stage (although still very usable as you can see) but I'll hopefully have a finished first version ready in time for the new school year. Keep an eye on my blog at http://genkienglish.net/teaching/

Be genki,

Richard

  • You were born to be a teacher. You make it fun and interesting. Not a boring lecture.

  • Uh, it caught my attention. I can't believe myself that I have watched the whole thing.

Interesting even for a native english speaker myself.

    You're such a good teacher!

  • I wish kindergarten grade was this fun when learning english! I'm american and am learning stuff from watching these videos XD. I'm learning Japanese, I wish you were my teacher for THAT!

  • I desperately need Japanese class at my school so I have someone in person to help with grammar, conjugation, and sentence structure. Since that isn't possible, I'll just stick with GenkiJapan and other online resources I find for now.

  • lol i cant believe i watched the whole thing XD

  • Great lesson and very original method... I can't understand why this stuff is not mentioned at all when someone is learning English.

  • I've gotta say you really know your things :-) The learning experience for kids really depend on their teacher's method. I'm not native english speaker, but I started learning english when I was... 5? Atleast long before I started in school. Was simple things really. Was Disney's "Fun with English" (translated). I had a lot of fun watching those movies, and I learned quite a lot. There's nothing more educating than games and other things children thinks are funny.

  • Baaaaaaaaaaah,,,,, I want you as my japanese teacher :< You're amazing.

  • ay, i wish we could have teachers like you at our school. you make lessons very interesting.

  • Thanks for great videos!!! i was wondering how long it took you to learn japanese this well! あなたの日本語は超上手ですよ!
