  • bottom line - no vaccine should be mandatory, but this is such a breakthrough in medical science, this vaccine needs to be encouraged. one study shows 25% of head and neck cancers are also linked to HPV 16,18 (same as cervical). HPV is also responsible for many anal cancers and penile cancers. this vaccine is the very first actual cancer vaccine - and it's NOT just for women.

  • Cancer will never deter anybody from having sex... but how could you tell your kid you don't want them to have sex so badly that you'd wish cancer on them if they had sex. Sick bastards!

  • Hearing a reporter just blurt out that the vaccine "hasn't been tested" is so incredibly irresponsible. Any woman who's had a cervical cancer scare should know that 3 shots is FAR less invasive than treating cervical cancer after the fact. A preteen can get the best immune reaction at 11 or 12--and the protect will be there for later in life.

  • @quemacha Pregnancy, unlike cancer, is not know to be highly lethal.

  • I agree with Rachel in so many ways although, I do not believe any vaccine should be mandatory. Rather, this vaccine should be strongly encouraged. The vaccine protects one from cancer! Also, this vaccine, obviously, works better before someone is having sex. This is not an issue dealing with sex, it s dealing with cancer. Anyone who decides that the risk of cancer is above them to prove they are not "sexually promiscuous " is making rash decisions with their health just to be proud.

  • Oh that elitist government, assuming that parents want their kids vaccinated against diseases! Rachel Maddow is so right on this. If it was polio, if it was the measles, if it was the flu, this republican strategist wouldn't say a word about the "government intervening in a family issue", because it's not. It's a public health issue. And just because it's a disease transferred through sexual contact, everyone has to get hysterical and loose their ability to think rationally.

  • How about mandatory long-term birth control shots for pre-teens?

  • Children will make the decisions they want behind their parents' backs. And if 16% of kids 14-19 are infected with HPV, then it's quite CLEAR parents are not making decisions that are best for their kids. We have empirical evidence for that. So the government needs to intervene.

  • .. How long do the vaccine's effects last? I mean unless they think their kids are gonna be virgins forever that pov makes no sense.. (the ppl who oppose it cus they think it will cause promiscuity, like some ppl feel about the pill).

Unless they want to later get the jab as part of some post-wedding pre-honeymoon tradition

Also 3:37 aww! Why did Rachel suddenly look really sad like she'd been attacked?

  • The HPV vaccine should not be a moral issue about kids having sex. The only concern that should be on anyone's mind is whether or not the vaccine works, because that certainly is debatable. But talking about it in the context of "It's elitist to assume that parents don't know what's best for their own kids", is 100% bullshit. Parents usually don't know what's best for their own kids; that's what doctors and trained medical professionals are for. Talk about the medicine, not the morality!

  • It's ridiculous how many ignorant people believe they "know" what's best for their children on health issues. These are the same morons that don't know thousands of people still die of influenza in the US every year. Vaccinations are the cheapest and most effective way of preventing and eradicating diseases. Sure, some people have adverse reactions to them (like any medication), but the mass majority will benefit.

  • no, it shouldn't. Not everyone is a slut.
