Fabio Basiolo had been our target and Fabio had now passed us by and was opening the gap to the lead ahead, diminishing into the distance. Joe was chasing about 3 hours behind him.
There was only one place Joe knew he would have to make a bid to catch Fabio and that would be a night stage through the wilds of Kerry. While the crew sailed off on better roads to meet Joe on the other side of the stage, the motorbike, routing van, and service car brought Joe through some of the toughest climbs and most harrowing descents in the black of night. Joe rode as hard as he could. He was clocked at around 70 mph descending through the dark on roads that could have landed him anywhere but whole. He made his bid to catch Fabio.
Having closed the gap and taken back 2 hours through the night, Joe continued chasing Fabio out to Mizen Head, the southernmost point of the island. Off course once, and a crash which rendered Joe's Park Pre bike fit for the bin and broke his foot, the pressure of the effort suddenly seemed like it might have reached each racer's breaking point. The only question amongst us was who would break first? Joe? Or Fabio Baisiolo?
