Clavicle (collar bone) fractures are a common occurrence, especially in contact sports. In the past, most fractures were treated nonoperatively (in a sling). Recent studies have shown, however, that nonopertive treatment results in high rates of nonunions and malunions. The latest research suggests that fixing the clavicle with a precontoured locking plate, like the one in the video, is a safe and effective way to treat a fracture, nonunion, or malunion of the clavicle. This surgery was performed by Mark Sanders, MD, FAAOS, founder of the Sanders Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, in Houston, Texas. The patient in this video came to the Sanders Clinic after having a failed operation by another surgeon from a different state, resulting in an ununited collar bone. The surgery begins with the exposure, that is, dissecting down to the clavicle bone. Dr. Sanders then applies the precontoured locking plate and inserts 6 screws (3 in each fragment with a working length in between). The patient began rehab the next day, lifting his arm above his head. • i broke my left clavicle 2 weeks ago. Its really dislocated and has broken pieces floating. One side is really poking my skin and if looks BAD. You can see the bone outline on one side of the clavicle. My orthopedic doc said no surgery needed but others said its an option but their are downsides to surgery. Nerve damages are often. Can i get your opinion? I want to have a fully functional shoulder. thanks

  • @rooshka92

I am sorrry, but I don't think I agree with the doc. I have not found nerve damage to be an issue. A crooked bone is always an issue. Perhaps its time for a second opinion.

  • my clavicle fracture accident was 3 months ago and i have 2 seperated parts of my clavicle that dont connect to each other, would i need surgery for this? and if i do how much do you think it would be without health insurance?

  • @AlbyShore44

The drive out cost for those paying cash, inclusive of all services is USD 15,500

  • MY patients typically are healed and can return to sports in eight weeks.

  • I broke my collarbone about almost a year ago now, I did not get surgery for it. It has now healed and i have the same strength in it as i belive i did before. However i now notice that my left shoulder is now shorter in length compared to my right. The bone over lap. I also get discomfert on the back of my neck/back on the side i broke it on. And when i raise my shoulders my right side makes a poping sound, it does not hurt i just dont know if somthings not right. Do i need surgery?

  • It is videos like this that make me realize I could never be a doctor. I mean, I have a strong stomach (I'm fine with blood. I can watch the butcher with sheep and chickens and cows fine) but I just could never do this to someone human.
