News In Brief - Gertrude Ederle, 33 years ago returned from England having swam the English Channel, New York City's first ticker-tape parade in 1926, setting precedent for Lindbergh next year (partial newsreel).
I sat with her in her nursing home one month before she passed. She got about as much respect as is voiced here. She was class personified. Terribly humble. A fierce survivor and thriver in life. Swam because she LOVED it. Period.
A new book on Ederle, Young Woman and the Sea, is coming out in July of 2009.
