Ruthie Alpern Madoff was born in Queens, New York. She is best known as the wife of financier Bernard Madoff who was her high school sweetheart. They have 2 sons, Mark and Andrew, who are partners at their fathers firm.

She graduated from Queens College in 1961 and holds an MS degree in Nutrition from New York University. Ruth Madoff was one of two executive editors of a kosher cookbook called The Great Chefs of Amica Cook Kosher that remains one of the classic kosher cookbooks in the past decade.

Ruth and Bernie Madoff were popular socialites and philanthropists in New York and Florida, where they were members of the exclusive Palm Beach Country Club.

Ruth Madoff joined the board of the Queens College Foundation in 1993 and voluntarily left her job as secretary of the Foundation in December 2008 because of the financial scandal involving her husband.

Despite claims to the contrary, investigators found that Ruth Madoff had maintained an account which mixed personal and fund monies. Investigators have determined that Ruth Madoff withdrew more than $15 million from a brokerage account co-owned by her husband in the weeks before Bernard Madoff was arrested. At this point, there are no charges pending for Ruth Madoff.
