U.S. Cyclists Defend Breathing Mask Use in Beijing Olympics

A third of the cyclists dropped out of the men's road race on 8/9/2008 blaming the suffocating and dirty air. Anticipating poor air quality, some of the U.S. Olympic cycling team arrived at Beijing airport wearing breathing masks and on August 12. The United States Olympic Committee has said that about one third of the USA team -- around 200 athletes -- had been issued with a breathing mask.

@janatajay It's bad on the road. I had to ride on my motorcycle with an open facemask in San Diego and my lungs are really tight. I noticed the inside of the visor on my helmet collected a lot of particles. I know its in my lungs. I'm getting some masks.
