@WOAHthatwascool Yes I am aware but that doesn't make it cleaner or more efficient. It takes more energy to refine diesel so the CO2 is generated elsewhere instead of your tailpipe. An engine that is using a fuel 15% more powerful but only makes 15% more torque or goes 15% further is 0% more efficient. Diesel is just good for saving space on engine size and fuel tank size, which is why it's good in semis, trains, boats where space is limited and range is important.

@raptorlp03 While diesel and gasoline have similar specific energies, the volumetric energy density of diesel is some 15% greater than gasoline. This means diesel fuel contains more energy per unit mass, and is therefore more efficient, per unit mass, than gasoline. As a result of this greater energy density, a diesel vehicle produces less CO2 per unit distance than a comparable gasoline powered vehicle.

Toyota is fantastic company, diesel is just more efficient than gasoline.

@WOAHthatwascool Diesels are worthless without turbos, turbos are consumable and costly to rebuild. There is no diesel car half the price of a Prius. Diesels are not even close to being more efficient than gas, diesel fuel just contains more energy than gasoline (why it's used in semis). Diesel costs more than gasoline and diesel cannot compete with hybrids in city mpg, and only barely on the highway. You're just a childish hybrid hater doing it because you think it makes you cooler.

It's really sad to see how people on here berate about solid, reliable family cars for the most obscene of reasons. I own a BMW, so I am not guilty as a hippie or a penny pincher. However, I do not see any reason to claim the Prius is a 'POS', as rednecks like to put it as, considering their heavy reliability on V8 powered muscle cars that cannot turn a corner without over-steering and gigantic pick-up trucks that crumble when you crash them. The Prius is a good, all rounded family car.

If you want to save money on gas, don't buy a diesel or a hybrid. Buy an all-electric or just convert your own. For most people they're ideal, and cost about 3c per mile.
