My third method of making hammock straps. I thought these up because I wanted a more compact set of hammock straps for day hikes. I specifically wanted something with built-in tree huggers so I wouldn't damage the trees. These straps go with hammocks that use carabiners, such as in my original hammock tutorial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8exaKW5ksg

This method requires two different knots --
Water knot: This is one of the most common methods for connecting two pieces of webbing. Be sure to leave tails (3 inches or so), as this knot is known to slip over time. Be sure to check how much tail you have left before using your straps.

Marlinspike Hitch: This one's pretty cool. After taking a nap in my hammock, the knot still dissolved away after I removed the carabiner. It didn't seem to slip at all.

One thing to keep in mind is that the paracord is nylon, which is a stretchy material. You'll need to hang your hammock tighter/higher than normal to avoid sagging all the way to the ground.

This video was filmed on location as I was building these for the first time. If you have any suggestions on ways to improve my design, I'd love to hear it!

  • A bit quirky, but a good video. Thanks! I liked the Marlin spike knot.

A bit quirky? You obviously haven't seen some of my other videos . . . ;-)

  • No need to pay me. Your knowledge is payment enough ;-) You know what they say give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for life. Same is true for hanging a hammock. Except I wont eat I will be hanging comfortably. O and did I mention I am 6' 5'' and 270lbs. And the sling did not slip and was able to untie it after hanging in it.

How about "Give a man a hammock, he's lazy for a year. Teach a man how to make a hammock, he's lazy for the rest of his life."

  • I made a set with some straps i had lying around, worked great. I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I really appreciate it.

You're quite welcome. It's good to hear of successes using these ideas. Makes me want to keep making videos!

What a great testimonial! I'll pay you later ;-)

I never learned knot tying in scouts either, or how to start a fire (without gasoline or kerosene) for that matter. I did, however, destroy a lot of stuff! It's amazing that anyone survived . . .

  • I'm in my new hammock having a great time! Thanks for your videos!

  • this is really good, thanks

  • Warning: Do not use those fake Chinese Carabineers the will not support over 100 Lbs.
