What happens when you take a ROM that only plays music and code a game around it? Something like this!

(Oy vey. YouTube did the excellent job of totally obliterating the bullets. A LOSSLESS AVI is here: http://xkeeper.net/img/pass1-test-cputest.avi )

It's really just a prototype for something bigger that runs in FCEUX (an emulator that's supposed to play *NES* games...), but hey, whatever works, right?

The music in this is from Batman (Sunsoft). Surprisingly fitting.

Some basics:
1. A fires bullets. It doesn't really ... do anything at this point.
2. Red bullets (balls, whatever) take off 1 health for every frame they hit your ship. They don't disappear on contact either, so get out of the way!
3. Bullets come into the screen at a progressively higher rate. This is indicated by the "fpb" (frames per bullet) in the lower-right corner.
4. Your score goes up progressively faster as you last longer, as well.

That's about it, really. It's surprisingly fun to play for how simplistic and (relatively) easy it is.

  • The AVI isn't lossless (I'm clearly seeing traces of the bullets left behind in the background), but it's a hell of a lot clearer than YouTube's version.

  • Hm. It was recorded at lossless quality in x264. Perhaps there was some error and it just saved it at a very high quality... in any case, yes, it's a lot clearer than the YouTube variant.

  • @Xkeeper0 I tried opening it. No luck. Anyway, you should try getting an NES Cartridge with a VRC6 Chip and learn that method for creating an Echo effect using only one sound channel, then you can make your own music. Also, add Co-op, Lives, Power Ups, Bosses, and more.

  • @Amaroqdricaldari This was more of a prototype using FCEUX as a game engine (as opposed to something better). None of the game logic is 6502-friendly.

  • The ROM isn't really something you can find, it's just Batman' music. Even then, the Lua script controls the music playing.

  • Great choice of music! Batman for the NES was tough as fucking nails, but it had some of the best and most memorable music I've ever heard. :)

  • Aye, that'd be why I picked it -- it fit pretty well :)

  • @Xkeeper0 What is 6502? Also, I had ideas for a 4-Player Pong with color and with music in the background.

  • I can see the bullets JUST FINE CRYBABIES!

  • Very nice. What's the name of the ROM that only plays music? (minus the bullet avoiding :P)
