Maybe the interviewer would like to tell the families of the roughly 100 Canadian soldiers who died in battle in Vietnam that it didn't really happen. The fact that the Canadian government wasn't resposible for the gallantry of some it's citizens seems quite fitting and consistent.
The Canadian government sent troops to Vietnam in August 1954 during the partition of Vietnam. They stayed through January 1973. They incurred casualties and several deaths. Confirmation and further details appear in the articles on International Control Commission and International Commission of Control and Supervision, both of which contain extensive links and references. The government of Canada awarded medals to 1,550 of these troops for their service.
You are right! I am Canadian born but CHOSE to serve in Vietnam by joining the American Army. My grandfather was an American and CHOSE to Come to Canada and volunteered to serve Canadian forces. What really matters is we chose to serve. I served with honor and distinction. I do not regret my choice !
