No visual symbol has gained a more harrowing impact on the Beijingnese unconscious than the word "Chai" in a circle. Yes people lived in bad conditions, the courtyards were overcrowded and bad sanitation, but tearing everything down without a careful and respectful replacement/redesign of downtown Beijing that preserves its culture and history, is just down right criminal. Who is the culprit here???
I live in the US now but I was born in Beijing and lived there till I was 12. Nothing breaks my heart more in the world than seeing this city being pillaged to rubbish by the impatient reformers. First after '49 the Party tore down all the city walls and gates, now after '89 they are tearing down what gives Beijing culture and soul. Now all the Beijingers live the suburbs, and in the city you'll find foreigners and those from other provinces who have no respect for this once elegant city.
Perfect! When we first saw the short film ,all of our class were touched ,he seems crazy ,but actually clear-headed. Maybe years after years ,nobody will remember the old Beijing,yes,the old Beijing.

It's so sad. I was born in Beijing, and used to live in the Si He yard. This movie reminds me that time.
