Firey Truck Crash Kills One

A Houston man was killed in a wreck Thursday morning when his box truck collided with a semi truck and trailer on U.S. 59 South near Cottonwood Church Road. Carlos Cruz, 59, died at the scene after his commercial-style box truck collided with a semi truck and trailer driven by Victor Gonzales, 52, of Conroe. After the crash, both trucks caught on fire and the road had to be shut down, according to the Rosenberg Police Department. According to Rosenberg Officer Cullen Brady, who was the lead accident investigator, Cruz was on the outside shoulder of the southbound lanes of U.S. 59 when he attempted to turn from the outside shoulder of the highway in an attempt to cross to Cottonwood Church Road. By doing this maneuver, he pulled in front of the two lanes of southbound traffic. Gonzales vehicle, which also was traveling southbound on U.S. 59, struck Cruzs vehicle on the drivers side and both vehicles slid about 200 feet on the roadway, left the roadway and landed in a ditch between the roadway and the railroad tracks, according to Rosenberg officials.

* Both vehicles caught fire, and the Rosenberg Fire Department extinguished the blazes. Gonzales was not hurt. Cruzs body was sent to the Galveston County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy. The wreck occurred about 9:50 a.m. and the road was reopened at 3:15 p.m., said Rosenberg Police Lt. Colin Davidson. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed until the accident investigation was complete and excess fuel could be cleaned from the scene. The wreck is still under investigation.
