The Edward MacDowell Medal is a national award given annually to an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to our nation's culture. On Sunday, August 15, 2010, Robert MacNeil, chairman of The MacDowell Colony, presented jazz composer and saxophonist Sonny Rollins with the 51st Edward MacDowell Medal. Rollins follows in the footsteps of such luminaries as Leonard Bernstein, Georgia O'Keeffe, Merce Cunningham, Alice Munro, and I.M. Pei. The award was given during a public ceremony at The MacDowell Colony -- one of the nation's leading nonprofit artist residency programs -- in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Pictured on stage in the far right-hand side of the video is renowned jazz critic and MacDowell Medal Day presentation speaker, Gary Giddins. The MacDowell Colony nurtures the arts by offering creative individuals of the highest talent an inspiring environment in which they can produce enduring works of the imagination.
