The map for the french colonisation is awesomely inaccurate. Just see by yourself in google O.O
...and the size of an empire don't have much to do with his "power". Napoleon fought every major powers of his time (UK, Russia, Austria, Prussia..) while Europe was by far the most disputed ground in the world.
For example the second french empire was "wider" (a third of africa etc..) but way weaker. In ww1 german territory was smaller than british, french or russian ones, but germany was stronger
