My cat, Chester, he use to do that all the time! He'd sneak it out of our cups or from the Christmas tree stand - it was so adorable!

My cat would clean his paws with his water and make it dirty.
Another thing he would do it drag his food bowl around the house when it was empty.

that is NEARLY one of my cats..except, he drops dry food in his water dish to flavour his water..he stirs it and takes a sip, drops another piece in and takes a sip..and stirs..and takes a sip..until it's just right flavour..then he drinks..
