We went and explored the old Renwick Ruin a couple of times. The ruin used to be the Smallpox Hospital, and it opened in 1856, and was designed by James Renwick, Jr., the architect who built St. Patrick's Cathedral. The city built the Smallpox Hospital using inmates from Blackwell's Island Penitentiary, which is also on Roosevelt Island.
