Dr. Susan Graham, Pehong Chen Distinguished Professor Emerita & Professor in the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as co-chair of the workshop organizing committee, welcomed participants to the meeting. She introduced Dr. Jeannette Wing, the Assistant Director for the Directorate for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), who spoke as co-sponsor of the workshop; and Keith Strier, Principal at Deloitte Consulting, LLP, and member of the workshop organizing committee, who described the structure and specific goals/expected outcomes of the breakout sessions.

Subsequently, Dr. Zak Kahone, Chair of Informatics & Lawrence Henderson Professor of Pediatrics & Health Sciences and Technology, as well as co-chair of the workshop organizing committee, was the moderator for the first plenary session. Dr. William Stead, Chief Strategy and Information Officer as well as Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, summarized the results and recommendations of a National Research Council report on Computational Technology for Effective Healthcare: Immediate Steps and Strategic Directions that he co-edited in early 2009. Dr. Latanya Sweeney, Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science, Technology, and Policy at Carnegie Mellon Universitys School of Computer Science, and a member of the Federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee, presented research problems for computer science and information technology in the context of a national health information infrastructure.
