Clay, New York (WSYR-TV) -- Police are investigating how a 37-year-old man, involved in a domestic dispute Monday night, died after being tasered by a Town of Clay police officer.
Town of Clay police were called to a domestic dispute at 4804 Norstar Apartments in Clay around 9:10pm. The caller said the victim, Christopher Jackson, 37, of apartment 213, was screaming and punching walls on the 2nd floor of the apartment building.
When Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies arrived, they found Jackson on the first floor. Police said he ran from deputies, and returned to his 2nd floor apartment, where he confronted a Clay Town Police officer, speaking with witnesses.
Clay Police say the victim began yelling and became aggressive toward the officer. Police say When Jackson began approaching the officer in a threatening manor, refused to follow instructions, police sat the officer tased him. Jackson continued to resist, and Sheriff's Deputies placed him in handcuffs.
Police say after being tasered Jackson was conscious and breathing but not responding. When paramedics arrived, Jackson went into cardiac arrest.
Jackson was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police Commissioner Owen Honors says the result was unfortunate, but using the taser seems to have been necessary for the officers safety.
"Right now, yes I am convinced that everything's been done according to the police and existing policy. Plus we're going to run it through the D.A.'s office and also the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department."
Honors says officers went through an 8 hour training course on use of the taser. He says since the department got them about a year and a half ago, this is the first time any of his officers have used it.
Right now, Honors says he doesn't plan to change the policy or stop using tasers. "We'll see what the investigation discloses when it's completed, if it is an issue we'll certainly address it and do what's necessary."
The District Attorney's office says it is conducting its own independent investigation and will present the facts to the grand jury when it's finished.
The police officer who tasered Jackson has been put on administrative leave, which is standard in a case like this.
We need to reduce the police powers of field detention. Period. We need to make it legal to just keep walking when a cop dreams up some nonsense BS reason to detain you. These people (cops) are terrifying. These are scary people. I'm way more scared of them than the Taliban, or Iran, N Korea or Vietnam.
