a track called 'distance equals rate times time' from the pixies ............from the album 'trompe le monde'

Fact:

Although the Pixies' musical style has changed over time, the band is considered to be an alternative rock band alongside similar bands such as the Throwing Muses.[75] The Pixies explored a range of song styles in their songs—although many songs were characterized by Francis' distinctive yowling and lead vocals, with Deal's feathery backing vocals (on songs such as "I Bleed" and "Debaser") and Santiago's erratic lead guitar. The band's sound has progressed from an indie rock sound on Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa, to a more sci-fi rock sound on Bossanova and Trompe le Monde. However, they have experimented with other genres of music, such as surf rock ("Cecilla Ann" on Bossanova), rock ("U-Mass") and pseudo-metal ("Planet of Sound" and "The Sad Punk", on Trompe le Monde).

  • you guys were way ahead of your time

  • makes me want to hear Lovely Day now

  • maybe the single best song of all time

  • For all trying to discover Nirvana's inspiration you need not look further than Gouge Away.... I've played it for my friends without any introduction and they've said "oh whats this Smells Like Teen Spirit ripoff?" Which to their surprise I tell them came WAY before Smells like Teen Spirit!

This by the way, isn't meant as a slight to Nirvana....every great band has had its influences, and Nirvana was great in its own right.

  • Why is this album so underrated? I've loved it since I heard it nearly 20 years ago. It has everything that makes the Pixies and Frank Black Francis great.

  • i fell in love with these babies as a child in 99 and just found this last night, it feels like xmas come early, i love it!!!!

  • @dashofchutmeg I agree, although Nirvana also picked up a lot of the single-note rhythm guitar stuff that the Pixes did (Very Ape sticks out as an example)

  • @josh2ee I think the loud-soft dynamic was what he took the most from them. This song, not so much, but this was released well after the Nirvana sound was "established."

  • Eh, not quite, Cobain's style was more of the chorus (no lyrics) - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - verse (1st verse repeated) - chorus thing. Or something like that, there were small variations on it. I think a lot of Pixies songs had a big influence on him. Probably the one Pixies song that Nirvana reminds me of the most is Rock Music, from Bossanova. But that's my opinion. There are a million little things that Nirvana, and most rock bands in the 90s, picked up from the Pixies.
