John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina and 2008 Democratic Presidential Candidate, discusses his proposals for dealing with American poverty.

-----

The Aspen Institute hosts Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards, the Democratic Party's 2004 Vice Presidential nominee, as a featured speaker at a special installment of the McCloskey Speaker Series. The series is made possible by a gift from the McCloskey Family Charitable Foundation.

Johnny Reid "John" Edwards (born June 10, 1953) was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2004, and a one-term U.S. Senator from North Carolina. On December 27, 2006, he announced his entry into the 2008 Presidential election.

Edwards was a trial lawyer before entering politics. He defeated incumbent Republican Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina's 1998 Senate election and during his six-year term sought the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential election.

He eventually became the Democratic candidate for Vice President, the running mate of presidential nominee Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. After Edwards and Kerry lost the election to the incumbents George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Edwards formed the One America Committee and was appointed director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. He was also a consultant for Fortress Investment Group LLC.

  • Edwards isn't taking a dime from corporate lobbyists, and is the only one talking about foreign lobbyists influencing our government into bad trade deals that are sending more jobs to other countries. He also wants to crack down on big corporations that set up a "headquarters" in another country so they don't have to pay taxes here - which puts the tax burden on regular Americans.

  • All the people arguing against socialist ideas, i guess you're all millionairs. I can't believe that a country as rich as America has such poverty, maybe it's because it's run by greedy, selfish bastards. If I were poor, living in America and it was invaded by another county I certainly would not volunteer for conscription (draft), why the fuck should I die for scum of the earth governments and corporations.

  • John Edwards should have been the President of the USA not Obama.

  • @samicxi he didnt leave. the democrats threw him out. I dont like that they did that. This is the biggest voice on poverty since RFK. besides, i think, if he had become president, every man would have gotten coverage for maintaining gorgeous shiny hair.

  • agree he is not a total puppet of wall street like obama and clinton he se or kucinich should have won

  • You can always find the most ignorant people on Youtube

  • He hasn't been silenced. People don't listen to his rubbish because he is a socialist know-nothing who cheated on his wife while she was dying of cancer.

  • With the collapse of the U.S. economy, more and more people are slipping into poverty,

we need John Edwards' voice NOW.

Why has his he been silenced?

  • Illegals? Arrest and deport....no exceptions.

  • You're an economic illiterate.

  • there is a problem there, it's not only tax breaks that the get in foreign countries, it's cheaper labour, bringing all companies within US borders would drive up world prices driving poorer people into deeper poverty, it's a great idea to protect american interests but it needs to be handled very carefully there are repercussions to every act, have to say though i like edwards thinking on most issues
