Found during pond clean-out, along with a dead one the same size - suspect nest disturbed by rat or bird, and fleeing snakes ended up in the pond. Fortunately, we were painstakingly emptying all the wildlife out of the pond into a better location in a shaded part of the garden, so this one was rescued (later, a second, smaller live snake was also rescued). After a brief incarceration in a large jar while I confirmed it was only a grass snake (and not a terrarium escapee), it was liberated near the new pond, where there is a liberal supply of baby frogs. I'll be extra careful when the landscaping is done!

  • this snake is a adder

  • @THESTREETBOIS No, it's a grass snake. The yellow 'collar' is a clear identifier. Adders have a strong, thick black zigzag down the centre of their backs and no distinct collar.

  • i found 1 today

  • @1345tux Lucky! I wonder if there are more about than there used to be?

  • a checkered garter snake or ringneck snake

  • Nope. It's a grass snake. I live in England and we only have three indigenous snake species so they're not difficult to identify.
