  • hi there i have a sprinter 311, some times by changing the gaer the are very stiff, and the jump out of 1 st gear is this a coman fault, can any 1 plz tell me about this, i woukd like mr BEVOIN1970 suggested on this aswell

  • @kkhan42 Yes they do go stiff after a while. Inside the van pull off the plastic boot cover from around the gear shifter and squirt a little oil onto any moving parts and work it in by moving the gear stick. Replace the Plastic boot cover.

Underneath the van on the gearbox look at the gear change moving parts - get someone to change gear for you whilst you squirt oil over moving parts. Thats it, should help out a little.

  • I've seen lots of vehicles with manual shifting transmission, and I've driven a few myself. But I don't see that many with the shifter on the dash board. Seems easier to use than that used on the floor between the driver and passenger's seat.

  • @Seattlecarnut By moving the shifter here especially on commercial vehicles such as mine, you free up the floor space between the seats, thereby allowing the driver to scoot across the seats and get out of the vehicle on the passenger side as well as the drivers side should he need too... Its quite a useful feature, especially on multi drops.

  • People here in the USA need to relearn how to drive manual shift transmission. We've gotten so spoilt with automatic that it's not funny. My two favourite cars had a manual shift. I had a 1978 Toyota Hilux truck, and I also had a 1986 Toyota MR2.

  • I've driven automatics over the years and it makes for a relaxing drive, more so in heavy traffic conditions where there are lots of stop / start situations.

Saying all that I think I still prefer manual shift overall.....

  • @liam21157 Me too Liam, me too... :)

  • It is so nice to gear up fast....

  • That makes sense. It seems easier with this setupfor the driver, and/or the passenger to get out and check the cargo in the back of the van.

  • I agree with you, automatic transmission does make for relaxing drive, sometimes I think a little TOO relaxing.
