If you're playing Armageddon or Deception, do you HAVE to play Konquest to unlock all that extra stuff?

Not necessarily. You can earn koins from the minigames too. Konquest is just the quickest way to unlock everything.

So, even before getting into Story Mode or whatever it is that MK has, you can unlock everything beforehand by playing Konquest?

Konquest IS the story mode. The real main fighting mode what all fighting games are about is called arcade.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure if you can just BUY characters like Taven, Daegon and Blaze that are locked at the start of Armageddon. There's also the Elder God armor pieces for KAK that you might have to just collect from Konquest.
